Corus, the British-Dutch subsidiary of Tata Steel, has sold its 50 per cent stake in Cindu Chemicals, a Dutch chemicals company. The decision to sell the tar distillation plant to Koppers International in Uithoom, had been taken because “tar processing is not a core activity for Corus,” the company said Tuesday.

China Armco Metals enters into scrap steel supply contract with major China steel producer.
China Armco Metals, Inc., a distributor of imported metal ore and metal recycler with a new state of the art scrap metal recycling facility in China, announced that Armet Renewable Resource Company, Limited, the Company's wholly owned subsidiary, has signed a contract to supply a major Chinese steel producer with up to 230,000 tons of scrap steel in 2010. The contract calls for the delivery of up to 23,000 metric tons of scrap steel per month for 10 months beginning in March of 2010. Based on the current spot price of scrap steel, this supply contract is valued at over $100 million.

Our forecast calls for further gains in the base metals markets over the next 4 weeks. Aluminum prices at the London Metals Exchange (LME) may make up for some of their recent losses and trend up by as much as 5% by the end of March. The market was nearly flat last month, but suffered steep losses in January. Copper, on the other hand, may rise less than our base price trend line suggests, as the red metal already gained considerably in recent trading sessions on the back of supply uncertainties after the Chilean earthquake. Copper gained roughly 6% in London trading last month and started strong into the month of March due to panic buying.
Nucor to acquire half of Mitsui’s U.S. Steel Unit.
Nucor Corp., the largest U.S. steelmaker by 2009 sales, will buy half of a U.S. unit of Japan’s Mitsui & Co. to jointly expand in the global market for the metal used in appliances, autos and construction.

US imposes anti-dumping duties on ArcelorMittal carbon steel wire rod.
The US Department of Commerce (DOC) announced the final results of its antidumping duty (AD) administrative review for carbon and certain alloy steel wire rod from Trinidad and Tobago, making no changes in the margin calculated in the preliminary ruling.
After 20 years and 10 following editions the company Sala Punzoni isn’t exhibiting during the next Wire Düsseldorf 2010. In Sala Punzoni’s opinion this fair has no longer the importance of the past years’ editions as it hasn’t been granting concrete news, new customers and new activities like it used to do in the past.

Further price increases are in the pipeline as steelmakers will continue to pass on higher input costs to consumers. Amid depleting stocks and improving demand in some industries and regions, buyers throughout Europe are already being forced to paying more for deliveries in March and beyond. Our model calls for further price increases in the flat steel segment over the next couple of months. The long segment meanwhile is set to rise even more.

The firm Spreafico, specialized in wire drawing and straightening, has finally translated its online stand in English, to present herself to the foreign markets.

India slaps anti-dumping duty on stainless steel imports.
India has imposed anti-dumping duty of up to $2,254 per tonne on import of certain stainless steel products -- used by consumer durables and auto industries -- from the US, EU, China and other countries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the value of mined minerals in the United States, excluding energy products, fell by 20 percent in 2009 compared to 2008.

The Metals Service Center Institute’s first report for 2010 found steel shipments from U.S. metals centers totaled 2.58 million tons, or 0.9% below January 2009 levels. As the latest month closed, U.S. centers held inventories of about 6.26 million tons, 26.2% less than the January 2009 inventory total. That is equal to a 2.4-month supply of steel in stock at current shipping rates.

Steel and concrete prices plunged last year in Abu Dhabi due to economic slowdown, a report said on Saturday.
The steel prices plummeted 43.9 per cent while concrete rates declined 13.5 per cent in the emirate in 2009, according to a report issued by Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi, or SCAD, part of Department of Economic Development Abu Dhabi.
ArcelorMittal, the world's top steelmaker, cautioned its markets would only recover slowly as it forecast higher shipments but lower selling prices in the early months of 2010, putting pressure on core profits.

Steel Authority of India to increase its crude steel capacity to 60 MT by 2020.
The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) intends to have its present crude steel capacity of 13 MT increased to 60 MT in 2020 through Brownfield and Greenfield expansion, a senior officer said.

Brazil may tax ore exports, seek more steel plants.
Brazil, the world’s second-biggest iron-ore exporter, may start taxing shipments of the steelmaking raw material as it seeks to lure investment in domestic steel plants, Energy and Mining Minister Edison Lobao said.
